Nicole Malliotakis (R-NY) has proposed legislation to make the tax burden for people who have a lot of equity in their homes and want to move but don’t want to pay a lot of taxes to do it by proposing the tax exclusion on residential home sales be raised from its current $500,000 to $1 million dollars. The amount hasn’t been indexed to inflation of raised since 1997 and in no way reflects current housing market prices. To say this would free up the housing market is an understatement and it would make the lives of seniors who have lived in their homes at least 25 years much easier.
