Negative attitudes toward autistic people, which are the precursor for discrimination, are quick and widespread, with neurotypical people taking as little as 10 seconds of exposure to an autistic person’s social behavior to decide the person is not neuro-normative and therefore ‘different’ (Sasson et al., Citation2017). Of concern are findings of a 2018 study of 111 autistic adults, which found that only 7% believed society accepted them, and 43% reporting they were not accepted (Cage et al., Citation2018).
