Saying that many people who crossed the border illegally should be able to stay is like saying a robber should be able to keep what they stole just because they managed to get away from the scene of the crime. Many who illegally entered our country have obtained resources and residency without waiting in line, with many being nonproductive and a drain on our society at the least, not to mention the costs involved to deport over and over again in the most egregious cases. Immigration law has not been followed, and I would say actively circumvented, and for that there must be consequences.
