A North Cape May Spouter's "solution" to gun violence is to "lock up the thugs and throw away the keys". This is simply a variation on the flawed argument, "punish the criminal". This mentality implicitly says, let the crime occur and then react. Let more mass shootings be committed, and then react. The better approach is of course to take measures to prevent the violence in the first place. Nor does the punitive approach explain how, once some thugs are locked up, more thugs - more "bad guys" - with too easy access to guns are prevented from committing more gun violence.
