A spouter questions the point of gun-control laws, citing an incident in which a mentally-disturbed individual shot and killed several people. The point is the same, to choose just one example of many, as that of laws against drunk driving. Do those laws prevent every drunk-driving accident? Of course not. Do they deter some individuals from driving while intoxicated? Absolutely. If we sufficiently valued the lives lost to gun violence we could enact universal background checks. We could adopt more stringent laws like other countries which have lower per-capita rates of gun violence.
