The idea of giving police officers take home vehicles so that they can respond to a major accident faster from their own home, suggests that there is not sufficient manpower on any given shift. When did it become illegal to use a POV to show up to an accident? Is the bickering between neighboring departments so bad that they can not call for mutual aid? Why is there 24-hour coverage if we can rely on off-duty officers to respond to accidents? Bottom line, take home cars are a burden to the taxpayer; a job perk that most times goes unnoticed, but needs to be dealt with.
