Remember all those cartoons when you were younger, doesn’t matter when you were born. A character would hide inside a cactus suit and sneak up on another moving a little bit every time, only when they weren’t looking. The loss of freedom works exactly like that only in reverse. Everybody took their eye off the ball. Lots of people make the same mistakes over and over, some won’t make the same mistake again.
