When I was 4 yrs old, my older brothers taught me when approaching a street to look left, then right, then do it again before entering the street. While in theory the marked crosswalks seem great, I have seen too many grown adults just walk out, phone to face and never glancing at the roadway. Remember this: cars hurt. Sometimes the driver is unable to see you and your phone due to large vehicles near the corners.
