We're always told to file our tax returns early to avoid the rush and minimize the chance of a scammer filing a false return to get our refund. So why are large companies like brokerage firms permitted to wait until as late as two months past year-end to post on their sites the computer-generated figures we need? (Our alternative is to scroll through years of statements to find our stock purchases to figure 2023 capital gains.)
