I vaguely remember the US around 1970 and I'm pretty sure there weren't many imports at all. Maybe some toys and radios from Japan. Some VW bugs, a few MGs and the one neighbor had a Volvo. No Airbus airplanes. Some Japanese TVs to compete with RCA, Philco (!), etc. Me? I think cars and airplanes would be the best case for tariffs, but I agree with you that the government shouldn't be choosing winners and losers. So I can't either. The only option seems to be across-the-board tariffs and let the chips fall where they may
