Avalon - The claim that there are some 20,000 gun-control laws in the U.S. is false. The exact number is not easy to pin down, but research has determined reliably that there are between several hundred and a few thousand. But, the point is not how many there are, but how effective they are. Gun fanatics say that gun-control laws do not work (they do, but they need to be stronger and national in scope), and so there's nothing we can do about gun violence, in effect, let the massacres continue. If the epidemic was, say, rape or arson, we would demand stronger laws. So, too, should we for gun violence.
