Clermont - In 1886, a great tragedy befell our small town (Clermont) when it was robbed of its original beloved name, Squedunk. In the language of the Lenape Indians who once roamed our forests and marshlands, Squedunk can mean “small one,” befittingly, “small town,” or my personal favorite, “squeezing the juice out of clams and oysters.” If North Wildwood is considering changing its name back to Anglesea, then it’s time that Clermont change its name back to Squedunk! I have a petition all ready to go.
